Connections

Dear Lokelani Waverider Families,

As we near the tail end of first semester and start the winter holiday season, I am reminded of how important human connection is.  One of my favorite quotes by Maya Angelou is; "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." 

We had an a great inspirational assembly today by the Strong Man Jon Pritikin where the clear message was that we must take care of each other and reach out to those in need.  At the school level, that can be: sitting with a student that is alone, offering to help a teacher while she prepares for the next lesson, holding the door for someone, cleaning up trash on our campus, or simply giving someone a heartfelt smile and a good morning when you see them at the start of the day.  I am fortunate that I work at a school where kindness is the norm.

Next week, we will have a "Mix it Up" day at lunch, where students will be encouraged to sit with different people and get to know students that they don't normally sit with at lunch.  I am excited for this nationally recognized event, sponsored by the Teaching Tolerance organization.  I know that are students will reach out to new people and start some new connections.

I am grateful and inspired by your children, our faculty and staff and the wonderful kindness that they share with me each day.  Let's make a commitment to pay it forward this holiday season and continue to make these positive connections with eachother.

We need you! Calling all parents!

Aloha Waverider Families,
We are very busy at Lokelani these days.  At this point of the school year, as the principal, I have to start planning for next year.  I have started conversations with my awesome administrative and leadership team on what we need to do to continue to improve student achievement at Lokelani.  With that said, I need your help.  Parent input is vital to fulfilling the goals of our academic plan.  Currently, all of our staff and some of our students are involved in our accreditation process where we are working on five key initiatives to improve our school.  These initiatives are Wellness, AVID, Enrichment, Technology and Assessment.  We need parents to join these Continuous School Improvement (CSI) Groups where we are working on these initiatives.  We meet on most Wednesdays from 2:05-2:45pm in the band room.  If you are interested in being part of the great conversations and planning about improving our school please call or email me and I will send you the scheduled meeting times. 

There are other avenues to be involved at Lokelani.  You could join the PTSA, the School Community Council (SCC) or volunteer for field trips or at our many events that require community participation.   In December we will have our second Career Day to fulfill our school year goal to expose our students to real career opportunities here on Maui and have them relate what they learn in school to college and career goals.  If you are interested in participating in Career Day please contact our curriculum coordinator, Kerry Gudmunson at the school.

Collectively we are responsible for the success of our keiki.  I welcome parent input and hope that you will join us on our continuous journey in school improvement so that our students have maximum opportunities in middle school, high school, college and beyond.  I wish everyone a wonderful November and Happy Thanksgiving and hope to meet more of you as you participate in the myriad of opportunities for parents at our school.
